Maya's Hotel Habit

Did you know Maya Angelou rented hotel rooms for months and used them as writing offices? Each day she drove from her home to the hotel and was stretched across the bed by 6:30AM, working on her craft.

We can't all rent our own private writing space, but most of us can find a special corner somewhere - a seat near the window in a favorite coffee shop; the corner stool at your local dive bar. Even if, like me, you have small kids or other concerns that tie you to the house, I believe it can be found. My solution is late-night writing while everyone else sleeps, but you may work better in the half-hour before your personal chaos wakes for the day. The actual writing space is less important than consistently showing up. And you can always take a cue from Erin of "The Office":
